Are you free to speak up at work (even if the boss doesn’t view others’ opinions positively)?
“Voicing our opinion shows everyone that we care about our work and want to contribute. Additionally, those who speak up are seen as more competent, as it gives the impression that we know what we are doing.”
I recall a book that mentioned a study of the unusually high number of Korean Airline crashes. They found the root cause was not faulty equipment but a cultural taboo where a co-pilot could not criticize the pilot, even if they knew something was wrong. A face-saving thing. Can you imagine?
My opinions weren’t valued by my boss during a brainstorming session early in my career, and I remember it well 40 years later. As I rose in the ranks, I remembered that lesson and tried hard never to shut down others’ ideas.
Read this new study. Do you disagree? (It is ok to do so!) ;-)
